No, you don't have to live with that annoying backfiring! I have a '97 that has been modified per Rider mag 01/97. See Bruce Clarkes website at www.islandnet.com/~brclarke/ls650.htm. He includes the 01/97 issue of Rider mag. If you follow the instructions, including changing the carb, you will no longer have backfiring problems.To me it was well worth the time and money involved, the bike sounds and runs great!
